Allergies - Nettles & Other Plants to the rescue

By Crystal Baldwin

Spring is finally here, but for many of us, the "pollen portal" has opened, bringing along the usual battle of itchy eyes and endless sneezing.

It’s frustrating when the beautiful weather feels off-limits because you're bogged down by congestion and poor sleep. But don't retreat indoors just yet!

If your standard prescriptions aren't doing the trick, it might be time to look toward nature. Plants offer some of the most effective, yet gentle relief for seasonal symptoms, and incorporating them into your routine is simpler than you might think.

Here are my top 3 go-to when battling allergies.  If your allergies are bad, I might suggest you do all three:

  • Drink Nettle Tea Everyday
  • Use WishGarden's Tinctures
  • Use our Allergy Essential Oil Inhaler

In previous classes we tested these out and so many people reported incredible relief using these 3 plant medicines without the use of any other pills or nasal sprays!

Stinging Nettles

Nettle is the ultimate "tough love" plant of the foraging world. It gets its name honest with little stinging hairs that inject a burning venom if you brush up against it.

But not to worry—as soon as you pour boiling water over it, the sting is gone! This simple blanching process transforms the formidable leaves into a nutritious, earthy green perfect for teas and soups.

If you aren't ready to brave the fresh harvest, dried nettle leaves are also easy to use and devoid of stinging activity, making them a pantry-safe way to enjoy the plant's many benefits.

Don’t let the name scare you! Stinging nettle is a powerhouse anti-inflammatory. It contains compounds that can naturally block histamine production. Sipping on nettle tea throughout the day can significantly reduce sneezing, itching and congestion as it is a drying herb.

Benefits of Nettle

Besides being the #1 allergy herb, nettles provides so much physical relief and it is a powerhouse of nutrition with an exceptionally high-protein level with dried leaves containing up to 25%–34% protein by dry weight.

When it comes to vitamin C Nettles are a massive source, with some sources claiming they contain seven times more than oranges and far exceeding spinach.

Not to mention nettles is loaded with minerals being exceptionally high in calcium, holding roughly 630mg per 100mg compared to roughly 126mg in the same amount of spinach and often holding 3–4 times more iron!  This makes it a perfect herb for people who are depleted or recovering from an illness.

  • Allergy Relief: As a natural antihistamine, nettle helps reduce hay fever symptoms, such as sneezing, itching and congestion.
  • Reduced Inflammation & Joint Pain: Nettle contains polyphenols and has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help alleviate joint pain, arthritis, and sore muscles.
  • Prostate & Urinary Health: The root is frequently used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and improve urinary tract function.
  • Nutrient-Rich: The leaves are packed with vitamins (A, C, K, B vitamins) and minerals (calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium).
  • Lower Blood Pressure & Blood Sugar: Nettle tea is known to act as a diuretic and may help relax blood vessels and reduce blood pressure. It also supports diabetes management by enhancing insulin secretion.
  • Skin & Hair Care: Nettle is used to combat oily hair, dandruff, and promote hair growth, while its antimicrobial properties may aid in treating acne and eczema

How Best to use Nettles for Allergy Relief

Nettles are so easy to use and incorporate into your life during allergy season.  Of course cooking with it is a simple way to get it into your system.  I throw it in soups, sauces, pestos and Sauté every chance I get.

For targeted allery treatment, make a large jar of strong nettle infusion and sip some everyday, throughout the day if your allergies are severe.  See video HERE

Always start with about 1 ounce of infused tea for the first couple of days to see how you react to it, then increase to a cup each morning and during the day.

If you are warming your tea, please do it on the stove and not in the microwave to avoid destroying all of the wonderful benefits that nettles have to offer.  Remember that nettle is a drying herb, if you find you are getting too dry, increase healthy fats like olive oil, coconut and avocados.

Urtication with Nettles- another use of nettles

Urtication, the practice of whipping  or rubbing the skin with fresh nettles which, creates a stinging sensation and a temporary rash or blisters is used today as a natural, topical counter-irritant to treat chronic joint and muscle pain, such as arthritis, sciatica, and rheumatism.

It works by stimulating blood flow and releasing histamine, which can decrease deep pain, improve mobility, and reduce inflammation, often used for knee, lower back or hands & wrists.

  • Purpose: It acts as a "counter-irritant," where the immediate pain of the sting overrides deeper, chronic pain, while also increasing blood flow & Lymph to the affected area.
  • Method: Fresh nettle stems and leaves are used to lightly lash or rub affected joints, often the knees, hips, or hands.
  • The Reaction: The nettle's tiny silica hairs release chemicals like histamine, acetylcholine, and formic acid into the skin, causing a burning sensation that generaly lasts about 10 minutes and can last hours for some.  It causes redness, burning, rash and blisters, all temporary and they will go away on their own.
  • Origins: The term comes from the Latin urtica (stinging nettle) and urere (to burn). Roman soldiers are reported to have used this method to stay warm and relieve stiff joints in cold climates.
  • Usage: It is still used today in some traditional practices to treat chronic pain, sometimes offering relief for several hours.

This really isn't as bad as it sounds or looks! HA. For most people it is a light "stinging" or burning sensation that starts to subside within minutes.  The rash or blisters also go away fairly quickly.

It is best not to rub or scratch the area after you have stung yourself with nettles as it can make your symptoms increase or last longer by pushing the formic acid further into the skin.  Just rinse with a little cool water and wait for the stinging to subside.

Cooking with Nettles

Using nettles as food is one of my MOST FAVORITE ways to use neetles.  Adding it to soups, stews, sauces, pestos and more gives you the most amazing boost of nutrients while combatng many of the symptoms we have discussed here today.

One of my favorites is to make nettle pesto which is easy to do and you can freeze it to be able to ingest fresh nettles during the winter months.  See my recipe HERE

Of course if you find some fresh nettles, you can always freeze the leaves to use later as the nutrients will still remain even if the leaves get soft.

WishGarden Allergy Tinctures

Two of the best tinctures for helping with allergies are WG Kick Ass Allergy+Sinus Soother and Kick Ass Allergy.  Both of these formulas work well for calming down the allergy response and bringing immediate relief without brain fog or stimulation.

The best part is you can use it as often as you need to for immediate relief, you don't have to wait for it to "kick-in" like many over-the-counters and you can get help in the moment.

Plus, there are no side affects like, drowsiness or brain fog and these are non-stimulating formulas so, no interuptions in sleep. So many reasons to LOVE these tinctures!

The Kick Ass Allergy Tincture

This fast-acting, non-drowsy formula specifically targets the "itchy" season, providing in-the-moment relief for itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, and endless sniffles.

Utilizing a potent blend of ingredients like Nettles and Yerba Santa, it supports a healthy histamine response without the brain fog.

The Kick Ass Allergy+Sinus Soother tincture

This carefully crafted formula supports a healthy immune and histamine response to seasonal stressors like pollen, mold, animal dander and more.

is designed for those moments when seasonal irritants transition from a minor nuisance to overwhelming head and chest congestion. While the standard formula targets common symptoms like itchy eyes and sneezing, this enhanced Sinus Soother version adds powerful "sinus-clearing heroes" like horseradish and yerba santa to provide deeper relief from stubborn facial pressure.

By promoting a balanced histamine response and encouraging natural mucus drainage, this non-drowsy herbal tincture helps you regain clarity and breathe easily again. Whether you are facing a new climate or peak pollen season, it’s an essential tool for maintaining healthy sinuses and a robust immune response.

Tincture Usuage

Use your allergy formulas by ingesting  4-6 pumps straight in your mouth (or added to liquid).

These are not a pharmaceutical so PLEASE use them more often.  You can take 4-6 pumps every five minutes up to 4 times an hour or a little more if needed for instant relief.

Start with 4 pumps and add more if needed until you find how many you need to get you allergy relief.  Some need less, some need more.

They are great for in the moment relief or once your allergies are calmed down, take them 3 times a day for continued relief.

This is one of those instances when more is more!

Allergy Essential Oil Blend

Essential oils help calm allergies through three main mechanisms: reducing inflammation, acting as natural antihistamines, and opening clogged airways. By inhaling or topically applying these plant compounds, you can target common allergy symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, and sinus congestion.

Our Essential oil Allergy Blend contains essential oils that help work on all levels, clearing out the sinus pathway, calming the histamine response and cleaning the air around you. We have found when this blend is combined with the Wishgarden Tinctures and nettle tea, people get immense relief!

How the Process Works
  • Lowering Inflammation: Essential oils like lime and lemon contain active compounds (such as monoterpenes) that suppress the inflammatory response triggered by pollen and dust mites.
  • Blocking Histamines: Some oils, such as chamomile and Black spruce, act as natural antihistamines. They can help soothe hives, calm the immune system, reduce inflammation and stop irritation at the source.
  • Clearing the Airways: Oils like, lemon, and peppermint act as natural decongestants. Menthol and similar cooling compounds immediately open up nasal passages, helping you breathe easier and reducing sinus pressure

TO USE

Here are some super easy steps when using your allergy blend:

  • Nasal Inhaler: Add drops to the cotton wick. Inhale deeply through each nostril throughout the day to calm your histamine response.
  • Diffuse: Use in a home or car diffuser to scrub the air and provide relief while you sleep or drive.
  • Topical: Mix a few drops into your daily lotion and apply around the nose and face

Nasal Inhaler

Using this blend with a nasal inhaler is a super easy way to continually treat your allergies, especially on the go.  We sell two options; a 3-pack of disposable inhalers (last about 3 months each) or a reusable metal & glass inhaler.

You apply the EO blend to the cotton wick inside the inhaler, pop the cap on and stick it in your pocket or purse.  Whenever you think of it, place it in each nostril, close off the opposite side and inhale deeply.

Doing this throughout the day continues to scrub your sinuses and sends a message to the brain to "calm down" helping alleviate the histamine response.

See video of how to use a inhaler HERE

Essential Oil Home Diffuser

You can also place the blend in an essential oil water diffuser and diffuse in your home to help clean the air or at night for nighttime relief while you sleep.

Topical Application

You can apply to the skin by adding a few drops to your daily lotion and applying to your face and around your nose.

Essential Oil Car Diffuser

Use a car vent diffuser to continue to clean the air and breath in the essential oils  in your car as you drive around.  Just apply your essential oil to the pad, pop it inside the vent diffuser and slide the diffusr between your car vent.  Turn on the air and start treating your allergies!  Another great way to keep applying a dose of essential oil easily, just by driving around!

Essential oils included are: Peppermint, Lemon, Black Spruce, Lime, and German Chamomile Essential Oils. Diffuse or use in an inhaler.

Comes in 5mL or 15mL bottle.

Also see our "Allergy Blend Kit" which includes 1 disposable inhaler and 1 reusable inhaler & a 5ml bottle of allergy blend. See video on how to use a nasal inhaler

Purchase a 3-pack of Blank Nasal Inhalers to keep in different locations (don't store in a hot car or essential oils will evaporate).
